JayPitts is content creator andn independent artist from Detroit, MI. He captivates his audience with his story telling ability whether it’s through a video or his music. Musically, Jay pulls inspiration from Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar and Lauryn Hill. If you were to ask Jay what all of his inspirations have in common, he’d say,“They all are my wise sages that represent various fighting styles in Hip-Hop. They exude rich black soul, lyricism, cultural relevance, experimentation, social rebellion, self development, honesty and vulnerability. That is all I hope and strive to represent”.Jay got his first major spike in engagement from a single, “Windows”, which he wrote during Covid. “I remember feeling grateful to be alive, I’d lost a couple loved ones to Covid, I quit my job in the psych ward and my future was uncertain like many other people. I have a family that relies on me. But for the first time in a while, I had the time to really hear my soul while being quarantined. I wasn’t sure of the future, and I let my creativity shine as it reignited my purpose. I had no idea a song I wrote in my Honda would go on to be my biggest record. God works in mysterious ways”.Shortly thereafter Jay also began sharing his experiences having worked 7 years in the psych ward. Although music is his first love, people heavily gravitated toward his mental health and wellness content through his viral storytelling on TikTok. This lead to Jay amassing over 1M TikTok followers and building a community of people that feel seen and heard by his content.
After JayPitts “Windows” went viral in 2020, it led to “Windows” being featured on the NBAs official playlist and garnered millions of listens across streaming platforms, still being Jay’s #1 song. However, streaming platforms presented themselves to be obstacles for Jay as well as smaller artists like him. Even with virality it wasn’t enough to comfortably provide for his wife and daughter, let alone support himself. Jay began to hone in on his content creation skills and refine his media to offer more value to his growing audience.“It’s my goal to create freely and be a light to people in darkness. Whether that is through music or a compelling video, I’ve found that my voice is needed in the spaces I occupy. I try my best to bring others power from my greatest and darkest moments to shape my words with the intent to relate and to heal.-JayPitts
